I thought my front garden was done with surprises this year but we have yet another amaryllis blooming. This one is the bright red one from the year before last but it is barely out of the ground the stem is so short. There are two huge red blooms that look as though they are just lying on the ground because there is virtually no stem. I did nick the bulb earlier in the spring, long before anything came through the dirt, when I was replanting my dahlia corms. I didn't think I had done much to it but clearly the stem is far shorter than usual so I must have done more than I expected.

I added this  photo this morning to show how short these stems are. The flowers are normal size though.
